Statistical Analysis of 1013 Cases of Surgically Treated Brain Tumors in Korean Population during the Year of 1986


Abstract
In this study, 1,013 cases of brain tumors surgically treated in 36 neurosurgical units of 41 major hospitals throughout the Republic of Korea during the one year period of 1986 were analyzed. Among them, 485 cases were males and 528 females.
Brain tumors occurred most frequently in the 5th decade, being 207 cases(20.4%). Supratentorial and infratentorial cases were 750(74%) and 263(26%), respectively. Of the 1,013 cases, 997 were histologically verified as follows : 324 glial tumors(32.0%), 199 meningiomas(19.6%), 140 pituitary adenomas(14.0%), 66 neurilemmoma(6.5%), 62 metastatic tumors(6.1%), 49 craniopharyngiomas(4.8%), 43 medulloblastomas(4.2%), and 130 others.
The glial tumors in order of frequency were 175 astrocytomas (53.1%), 74 glioblastomas (22.8%), 48 oligodendrogliomas(14.8%), 15 ependymomas(4.6%), 7 mixed gliomas(2.2%), and 5 choroid plexus papillomas(1.5%). Age distribution of the brain tumors was as follows : childhood and adolescence 249 cases, middle age 425, age of involution 318 and old age, 21.
Of the 249 cases of childhood and adolescence tumors 142 were males and 107 females ; supratentorial tumors were 160 cases, infratentorial 89, astrocytomas 72, medulloblastomas 34, craniopharyngiomas 26, germ cell tumors 25, and others 92.
